Creative baking, part two: We create interesting shapes

21.04.2023

Over the next few months, we'll be covering a series of tips and interesting facts that are useful if you want to improve your baking skills. The second part of our Creative Baking section describes how to create not-so-standard dessert shapes. Are you inspired by our ideas?

Geometric shapes

With geometric shapes, the possibilities are really diverse. You can create sweet treats in the shape of a triangle, a circle, a cube or even a hexagon.

Hexagonal shapes can be used to create unique cakes, cookies or pastries. Once baked, the hexagon shapes can be stacked and layered to create multi-dimensional treats. For example, a hexagon-shaped cake can be decorated to look like a honeycomb. Use yellow fondant to cover the cake and make hexagon shaped honeycombs on the top and sides. At the end, you can also add a couple of bees or a fondant honey dipper.

Cubes are ideal for creating 3D treats that are very visually interesting. The cubes can also be stacked and layered to create impressive desserts with a modern twist. Here's a concrete idea for inspiration: If you're baking a cake for a special occasion, you can create a cube-shaped cake that looks like a gift box. Cover the cake with fondant and add a fondant bow to complete the look.

Shapes of numbers

If you can't think of anything that might interest your loved ones or guests, try creating desserts in the shape of numbers. A number cake is a popular choice for a birthday cake. To express the age being celebrated, you can use a number and decorate the cake with colored frosting, edible decorations or candles. You can also make a cake in the shape of a number to celebrate the anniversary. Use a number that represents the number of years being celebrated and add some decorations that represent the couple's interests and personalities. If you're making a cake for a sports fan, consider creating a cake in the shape of their favorite player's jersey number. You can decorate the cake with team colors and logo and add some fondant footballs, basketballs or other sports equipment. A graduation cake can be a great way to celebrate this important milestone. You can add a graduation cap, diploma, or other decorations that represent the graduate's school or future plans.

3D shapes

At the very beginning, we attach concrete ideas on how such a cake can be realized: A cake in the shape of an animal can be a fun addition to a child's birthday party. You can choose an animal that the child would like to have or knows from a fairy tale and cover the cake with fondant or decorate with frosting to make it look realistic. A cake in the shape of a car, train or plane is a great way to celebrate a transport enthusiast's birthday or other special occasion. You can use fondant or icing to create details such as wheels, windows and doors. A cake in the shape of a musical instrument can be a great way to celebrate the birthday of a musician or music enthusiast. You can use fondant to create details such as laces, keys or buttons. These are just a few creative ideas for a 3D cake. The possibilities are endless, so let your imagination run wild!

Shapes inspired by nature

Leaves can be used to create beautiful and realistic designs on your cakes. For example, you can make cookies in the shape of leaves. You can also hand cut leaves from dough or fondant to decorate cakes or tarts. Consider using different types of leaves such as maple leaves, oak leaves or fern leaves to add variety to your sweet treats. Chocolate leaves are a unique and elegant way to decorate cakes, cookies or other desserts. You can use real leaves as a template and spread melted chocolate on the leaves and then let them set in the fridge. After the chocolate has set, carefully peel off the actual leaf.

Flowers are a very common and versatile shape inspired by nature that can be used in baking in a variety of ways. You can create cookies, cupcakes or cakes using cookie cutters, molds or flower-shaped baking molds. Experiment with different types of flowers such as roses, sunflowers or daisies to create different looks and styles. You can use a cookie cutter or flower template to create the desired shape and fill the cake with your favorite fruit or pudding filling. Sourdoughnuts in the shape of a flower, which we can fill according to our own taste, could be interesting. And you only need an ordinary glass to shape them. Will you try?

What will you need to create unconventional shapes for your desserts?

1. Cutters are a great way to create unusual shapes when baking. For example, you can use them to make biscuits or cookies. Look for unique shapes like animals, letters, numbers, or seasonal shapes like pumpkins or hearts. We also offer themed cookie cutters, whether for gifted footballers or fashion enthusiasts.

2. Silicone, ceramic or metal molds can help you create unusual shapes for cakes, tarts and savory pastries. These forms can be of different shapes and sizes, such as flowers, stars or even geometric shapes. Baking tins of different shapes can give your goodies an appearance. Our favorites are the silicone mold for making rose-shaped cookies and the baking sheet for baking donuts.

3. Use a piping bag : Decorating bags can be used to create unique shapes for cupcakes, cookies, and other baked goods. You can use different decorating tips to create shapes such as stars, swirls or flowers.
